An intricate doorway in the Niu Jie (Ox Street) mosque in Beijing's Muslim quarter, where photography is not allowed. Fascinated by the detail of the arch and forbidden the quick snap, I tried to capture it with pencil on paper.

To draw the arch I had to do something one rarely does when traveling in a new place; stand still for a long time and look at only one thing. Taking the time to sketch instead of snap forces one to see a place in a differently, in a different level of detail.

Enclosed are sketchbooks from travels in Asia and elsewhere. By no means the work of professionals, these drawings depict places that cannot be photographed or details often overlooked through the lens of a camera.

Contributions welcome.
